In 1979, PetGuard® was born out of meeting the needs of pets and their families. Sharon Sherman, one of the founders of PetGuard®, grew up watching her mother cook healthy meals for the pets in their home. This started Sharon’s early belief in the importance of wholesome natural food in the health and well-being of people and pets.

The Sherman Family became leaders in the early natural food movement through their Natural Foods Grocery store with dedicated customers who were concerned about nutrition, health, and minimizing toxic chemical exposure. At this time, commercially available pet food and supplements did not address these concerns. Customers visiting the store voiced concerns for their pets' health. These conversations and reflections upon the healthy meals Sharon’s mother prepared at home became the genesis for all-natural and chemical-free supplements and foods for pets, products with the same high quality, all-natural ingredients that are so helpful to humans.

Before natural pet foods were commercially available, PetGuard® created wholesome, natural foods with quality ingredients, free of preservatives, artificial colors, sweeteners, and by-products. Before ingredients like chelated minerals, natural preservatives, and real meat became popular in pet food, PetGuard® foods contained those ingredients. PetGuard® entrees have remained consistent over time, focusing on the health of the pet, not the trends of market. In addition to foods, PetGuard® is focused on the complete health of the pet which includes providing quality supplements, natural pest control support, and quality grooming products.
